Wood Siding Installation

in Apex, NC

Apex Pro Siding & Wrap brings over 15 years of hands-on experience in siding, house wrapping, and exterior insulation systems. Wood siding is the original exterior cladding material for American residential construction and remains the benchmark against which every manufactured siding product is compared for appearance and texture. No vinyl, fiber cement, or engineered wood product fully replicates the grain variation, depth, and dimensional character of genuine wood — and for a segment of Apex homeowners and property owners, that difference matters enough to justify the maintenance commitment wood requires. Western red cedar, eastern white pine, and redwood are the most commonly specified species for exterior siding in the Southeast, each offering distinct performance characteristics in North Carolina's humid subtropical climate.

Properly installed and maintained wood siding has a documented service life exceeding 40 years — longer than most vinyl products and comparable to fiber cement when the maintenance cycle is followed. The critical variables are species selection, six-sided priming before installation, correct back-priming at all field cuts, proper drainage plane integration, and a repainting schedule of every 5–7 years in North Carolina's climate. Apex Pro Siding & Wrap installs wood siding on residential and commercial properties across Apex, Wake County, and Chatham County, and we are direct about the maintenance requirements before any contract is signed.

Wood Siding Installation Services We Provide

Species Selection and Material Sourcing

Species selection is the first and most consequential decision in a wood siding project. Western red cedar contains natural oils — thujaplicins — that resist fungal decay and insect activity without chemical treatment, making it the most durable option for North Carolina's humid climate. Eastern white pine is less naturally decay-resistant but takes paint and stain well and is significantly less expensive than cedar. Redwood offers decay resistance comparable to cedar but is increasingly difficult to source at consistent grades in the Southeast. We discuss species options, grade specifications, and sourcing lead times during the estimate and do not substitute materials after contract signing without written approval.

Six-Sided Priming and Pre-Installation Preparation

Every piece of wood siding we install is primed on all six sides — face, back, two edges, and both ends — before it goes on the wall. This is the single most important installation step for wood siding longevity in a humid climate. Unprimed end grain absorbs moisture at a rate up to ten times higher than the face, and end grain moisture absorption is the origin point for the majority of wood siding failures within the first ten years. We use an exterior-grade alkyd primer on all wood products and apply back-prime coats in our staging area before panels reach the wall.

Weather-Resistive Barrier and Drainage Plane

Wood siding installations require a continuous weather-resistive barrier integrated with properly lapped and flashed window and door openings, kick-out flashing at roof-wall intersections, and sealant at all penetrations. We install Tyvek HomeWrap or equivalent WRB products with fully taped seams and integrate all flashing details before the first board goes on the wall. A correctly installed drainage plane behind wood siding allows the back of the boards to dry — without it, trapped moisture accelerates decay regardless of species or primer quality.

Profile Installation — Clapboard, Shiplap, Board-and-Batten, and T&G

We install four primary wood siding profiles: clapboard lap siding, shiplap, board-and-batten, and tongue-and-groove. Clapboard is the most common residential application and is installed with a minimum 1-inch overlap at manufacturer-specified exposures. Shiplap requires careful attention to joint alignment and movement gaps. Board-and-batten — vertical boards with narrower batten strips covering the joints — is common on craftsman and farmhouse-style homes and is specified on a number of properties in Apex's newer growth corridors. Tongue-and-groove is used on soffits, porch ceilings, and accent wall applications. All profiles are installed with stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners to prevent tannin staining on cedar and redwood.

Finish Coat Application and Color Consultation

We apply two coats of 100% acrylic exterior paint or solid-body stain over the primed surface on all wood siding installations. Finish coat application is included in our standard wood siding installation contract — we do not leave primed-only installations for the homeowner to finish, because unfinished primer exposed to UV and moisture deteriorates rapidly. Color selection and finish type (paint versus stain) are confirmed before installation begins, and we provide samples on the actual wood species being installed for accurate color preview.

Trim Integration and Caulking

Corner boards, window and door casings, frieze boards, and rake trim are installed before siding panels and primed on all sides before installation. All trim-to-siding joints, butt joints, and penetrations are caulked with a paintable siliconized latex or polyurethane sealant. We do not use silicone-only sealants on wood siding — they cannot be painted and fail adhesion at wood interfaces within two to three years in North Carolina's climate.

Types of Properties We Serve

Historic Residential Properties

Apex's Historic District and surrounding pre-war neighborhoods contain a significant number of homes with original wood siding that has been poorly maintained, damaged, or covered with vinyl in previous decades. We restore and re-side historic residential properties using wood species and profiles appropriate to the structure's original construction, and we work within Apex Historic District guidelines and any applicable local preservation standards. Where original profiles are no longer available in standard stock dimensions, we source custom-milled profiles to match.

New Construction and Custom Homes

Wood siding is specified on a portion of new custom home construction in the Research Triangle area, particularly on craftsman, farmhouse, and traditional architectural styles. We work with custom builders and architects on new construction wood siding packages, coordinating material sourcing, priming schedules, and installation sequencing with the overall build timeline. All new construction siding work is permitted and inspected through the Town of Apex Inspections Department or applicable jurisdiction.

Residential Re-Siding

Homeowners replacing failed or deteriorated wood siding have the option to re-side in wood, upgrade to fiber cement, or transition to vinyl. We install all three and do not steer customers toward a particular product for margin reasons. For homeowners who want to stay with wood — for aesthetic reasons, for historic compatibility, or for personal preference — we explain the maintenance commitment clearly, provide a realistic repainting timeline for North Carolina's climate, and install to a standard that maximizes the service interval between maintenance cycles.

Commercial and Mixed-Use Applications

Wood siding appears on commercial buildings, restaurants, retail storefronts, and mixed-use developments throughout the Research Triangle where architectural character is a design priority. We install wood siding on commercial projects with full permit coordination and can work with architects and general contractors on shop drawing review, material specifications, and installation sequencing for occupied buildings.

What Our Customers are Saying

"We restored our 1940s bungalow with cedar clapboard to match the original profile. Apex Pro sourced the right grade of cedar, primed every board before it went up, and the finished result is exactly what we were after. The Historic District review went through without a single revision request."

— Anne and Robert D., Apex, NC

"Most contractors we talked to tried to talk us out of wood and into fiber cement. Apex Pro gave us the honest maintenance picture and then let us decide. We went with cedar and couldn't be happier with the installation quality."

— Michael T., Chapel Hill, NC

"The board-and-batten installation on our new farmhouse build came out perfectly. Apex Pro coordinated directly with our GC and hit every inspection milestone on schedule."

— Jason and Kelly P., Pittsboro, NC

Wood Siding Installation FAQs

How often does wood siding need to be repainted in North Carolina?

In North Carolina's humid subtropical climate, wood siding with a quality 100% acrylic exterior paint finish should be repainted on a 5–7 year cycle. South- and west-facing elevations that receive the most direct sun exposure will reach the repainting threshold faster than north- and east-facing walls. Solid-body stain penetrates the wood surface rather than forming a film coat and may require reapplication on a slightly shorter cycle — typically every 4–6 years — but is easier to touch up between full repaints. Skipping a repainting cycle in this climate allows moisture to penetrate the finish coat and begin degrading the primer layer underneath, which compresses the service life of the installation significantly.

What wood species holds up best in Apex's climate?

Western red cedar is the best-performing wood siding species for North Carolina's humid climate due to its natural decay-resistant oils. It is also the most expensive of the commonly available species. Eastern white pine is the most budget-friendly option and performs adequately when properly primed and painted on schedule — it has less natural decay resistance than cedar but is widely used across the Southeast. Redwood performs comparably to cedar but is increasingly difficult to source at consistent grades east of the Mississippi. For most residential re-siding projects in Apex, we recommend cedar for longevity and pine for cost-conscious applications where the maintenance schedule will be followed.

Is wood siding a good choice for homes in Apex's newer subdivisions?

It depends on the homeowner's priorities and HOA requirements. Wood siding is an excellent choice for homeowners who value authentic material character and are committed to the maintenance cycle. In Apex's newer planned communities — particularly those with active HOAs — exterior color and material changes typically require HOA approval, and some HOAs specify that replacement siding must match the existing product type. We review HOA documentation with homeowners before finalizing material selection and can provide product samples and written specifications for HOA submission.

Does wood siding attract termites or carpenter ants?

Untreated wood siding in contact with soil or in poorly ventilated wall cavities does create conditions that attract termites and carpenter ants. The primary preventive measures are maintaining a minimum 6-inch clearance between siding and grade, ensuring the wall cavity dries properly through a correctly installed drainage plane, and keeping the paint or stain finish intact to prevent moisture accumulation in the wood. Western red cedar's natural oils provide some deterrence against insect activity, but no wood species is fully immune. We install all wood siding with the required clearances and drainage plane details that minimize insect risk.

Can wood siding be installed over existing siding?

We do not install wood siding over existing siding. Wood siding's performance depends on a correctly installed drainage plane and a verified, solid substrate — neither of which can be confirmed without removing existing cladding first. Installing over existing siding also adds wall thickness that can create issues at windows, doors, and trim transitions, and traps any existing moisture problems inside the wall assembly. Every wood siding installation we perform begins with full removal of existing cladding and a documented substrate inspection.
