Visible Surface Deterioration That Has Gone Past Cosmetic
Fading and chalking on painted or factory-finished siding is normal over time and does not by itself indicate a need for replacement. But fading that has progressed to the point where the finish coat no longer sheds water — visible as water absorbing into the surface rather than beading off — means the protective finish has failed. On wood and primed fiber cement, a failed finish coat is an open door for moisture. On vinyl, widespread fading combined with surface brittleness is a sign the material has degraded from UV exposure beyond its functional range.
Bubbling or peeling paint on wood or primed fiber cement siding is not a painting problem — it is a moisture problem.
